Answer: curb appeal, baby!
Also: none of them come with electronic stability control.
Consumer reports released a list of 2010 model year cars sold in the U.S. that don't offer the electronic driving aid/nanny, and the Aveo finds itself in both expected and unexpected company.

It's a strange group of bedfellows that includes the pricey Tesla Roadster and the Hyundai Accent, one of the cheapest cars in America. Consumer Reports' online blog tallied the 2010 vehicles without electronic stability control and found it only numbers nine.
The list includes the Chevrolet Aveo, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Dodge Dakota, Dodge Viper, Kia Rio, Lotus Elise and Scion tC. The Hyundai Accent seemed to be an unlikely inclusion, given that Hyundai has touted its embrace of the safety feature, which is in most of its lineup.

Personally, I wouldn't care whether my new car had traction/stability control. In fact, I think I'd prefer if it didn't.
Then again, I've never owned a car with ABS, and that wouldn't be a deal breaker either.

most people with abs still pump their brakes anyhow. i liked that the aveo didnt have abs but it is optional.
Re: What does Aveo have in common with Viper & Tesla Roadste
Yeah, I don't have ABS either. I find it more dangerous on ice in a slide with ABS. I just don't like it. I had to drop a gear and rip the e-brake once this winter sideways through a red light at an intersection to dodge a car that spun in front of me...I don't know how well I'd be able to respond if the car wasn't 100% in my control. I have racecar reflexes, so I'm not gonna put up with fighting my brake pedal for ownership.
Re: What does Aveo have in common with Viper & Tesla Roadste
Also, should I call this an uneducated guess, but I think neither Aveo nor Viper have that many of aftermarket upgrades... Aveo because people tend to keep it stock because it's just a commuter to save money, and Viper already has more power than it needs. :D
Re: What does Aveo have in common with Viper & Tesla Roadste
a friend of mine bought and installed a twin turbo kit that dyno'ed at around 1400 hp..
i consider that aftermarket support. I understand what you are saying though, unlike honda there isnt 50000 of the same cheaply made "performance" parts listed on ebay.. its big money upgrades only.
Re: What does Aveo have in common with Viper & Tesla Roadste
That was exactly my point. :D
