What brand of timing belt is the best?
In shopping for a timing belt (just passed 50k) In looking around I see a belt from "Contitech"? is a more expensive belt than the others...Is it any better than the gates item?
The Dayco one can be had for about the price the Gates belt.
Would anyone trust one of the relatively cheap belt kits from Ebay?

Re: What brand of timing belt is the best?
Your powertrain warranty is 160,000km so if you put on a non OEM part and it breaks again, they probably won't cover it.

Re: What brand of timing belt is the best?
my stock one was gates. what makes the contitech one twice the price?
my powertrain warranty was 3/36,k miles or 5/50k with the extended powertrain warranty I bought. Thats now out the window.

Re: What brand of timing belt is the best?
Hey wait, now that I think about it...its 5/60, so I still got 8k miles.

Re: What brand of timing belt is the best?
I've always used Gates belts. They hold up well. Why pay more for the same?
-
Re: What brand of timing belt is the best?
i personally was wondering if there is a more "heavy duty" belt if thats the right word to use. a belt that will hold up longer since timing belts on these motors in my opinion are problematic.
-
Re: What brand of timing belt is the best?
every company will claim thiers is the best. But if there is a "heavy duty" belt, what would be the replacement time on it? Might as well stick to something you know needs to be changed at XXXXX miles
-
Re: What brand of timing belt is the best?
even if you buy a "better" belt you should plan on the change interval being the same. why gamble to see if it will last an extra 5, 10 or 15 thousand miles?
think of "better" as less likely to break early, than as an option to go longer.

Re: What brand of timing belt is the best?
i guess my idea was trying to find a solution to the 60K replacement period. i was hoping to find a solution of a bulletproof belt that had the strength of an actual timing chain.

You won't find one, belts will never have the integrity of a chain.

Re: What brand of timing belt is the best?
8 valve belts tend to last a little longer than 16 valve belts. but the maintenance is the same. i have seen aba vw engines got 120k on the original belt(that same car also never had an oil change since new). i would never recommend it, the first time it is usually $600. the second replacement (if you still have the car) is typically cheaper because its not done at the dealer. but even a $600 maintenance every 60k is only like $.01 a mile driven. thats about the same rate as a $30 oil change every 3000 miles..

i know that there is a huge difference between the two different materials. i guess i was hoping to find a "lifetime" belt.

Re: What brand of timing belt is the best?
when i worked at autozone our best belt was the gatorback goodyear belt. It was specially ribbed to have less road noise and definitely appeared better quality than the others we sold. Also I was told but never confirmed they come with a lifetime warranty from goodyear. all i know is whenever our local auto shops were working on their personal cars these were the ones they bought.

I'd assume the timing belt, as the idler pulley is not cogged and runs on the backside of the belt.
-
Re: What brand of timing belt is the best?
What?
'Loose' says something about a specially ribbed belt quiet , and you say something about the idler pulley riding on the back of the belt? If the ribs ride over the idler, wouldnt that be noisy?
Surely the toothed side isnt ribbed? is it?
You guys are either both talkin 2 different things, or someone needs to add some details here.
Please everybody stop making so much sense and being so informative...

Re: What brand of timing belt is the best?
gatorbacks are serp belt that have a "riding" face on the front and back, where most serp belt actually only have one face... it is sort of ribs and slits, on the back of the belt, like the skin of an alligator. it supposedly make it last longer since it doesnt were the structure of the belt on the backside.. i used gatorback conventional V belts and the squealed a lot when they were wet.
i have never heard of a gatorback timing belt.

Re: What brand of timing belt is the best?
every belt will squeal when wet
-
Re: What brand of timing belt is the best?
typically belts have vertical striping for grip, gatorbacks are criscrossed.

Re: What brand of timing belt is the best?

Re: What brand of timing belt is the best?
well, at 91,206 miles i finally bit the bullet before my timing belt snapped. i dropped it off this morning for a new timing belt, water pump and a new serpentine belt. thank god it didnt snap before! the sevice tech said the replacement belt is made by gates. as soon as i get the car back its going over to the tire shop for an alignment and a new set of tires being as how i'm almost on slicks. i'm putting on bf goodrich traction t/a's all season. i will post a pic of the timing belt as soon as i get it back from my chevy dealership. it was more expensive to have the work done there, but they warranty it for 12 months/12000miles. cost is $698.00 u.s. i posted pics of the used parts in the photography section.

Gates
Goodyear
Cloyes
Conti-tech

i got no kisses, nor even a reacharound. that was slightly disappointing. however before i turned over my beloved aveo, and my wallet to my local chevy dealership i did stop at a repair place locally that has been in business for 20 yrs called metric motors. i was quoted a price of $369 for just the timing belt alone, and $585 for the timing belt, waterpump, idler and tensioner pulleys. i fully understand that my choice was much more expensive but i have a peace of mind knowing that it was done at chevy, and that the repairs are warranteed should any part of the repair fail within 12 months or 12000 miles. my aveo is such a great little car and both my wife and i are very fond of it so it was worth it to me. matter of fact after the dealership i dropped it off for an aligment and a new set of michelins.

Re: What brand of timing belt is the best?
I'm just about to order the belt, and now I can decide....Dayco? or Contitech?
-
Re: What brand of timing belt is the best?
Gator belt is a serp. belt. I've always used gates, cause it's what they always had at NAPA. Never had a problem. I'm sure there are better ones, but this aint no 10 second track car, I think you'll be fine.
