shifter not aligned with correct gears

Hi, Just joined the forum, so I hope I'm following proper protocol. I have a 2005 aveo ls with an automatic transmission, actually my 16 yo daughter's. Last night she put it in park and it continued to roll, as if in neutral. It would not start in either park or neutral, as if it were in drive or reverse. I thought it was the neutral safety switch, but if I put the shifter in reverse, it acts like neutral and starts. It's as if the shifter is misaligned with the actual gears. I have all the forward gears, though fourth engages in the neurtal position, and park occasionally engages as reverse, though not all the time. I have brake lights, transmission fluid is fine and it shifts fine through the forward gears. In the process of trying to get it to start, I did put the key in the shift lock release, though I'm not sure that this had any effect

The shifter is connected to the transmission by a cable, and it sounds as if the connection between the shifter and trans has slipped. My Aveo is a manual trans so I can't tell you exactly what the configuration is, but hopefully someone familiar with the automatic will chime in. Here's a good link in a post by ResqDogz (whom I thank!):

sound like the end of the shift selector is slipping, you could either tear it apart and see, or buy a new one.

To verify it is the shifter assenbly, get under the hood, see where the arm is that runs through the gears, and verify you can click it into all positions while running if able. TAKE ALL PRECAUTIONS NOT TO RUN OVER YOURSELF!!

      problem solved

It turns out it was the cable. The housing had come loose from the mount on the front of the transmission-a clip ring had come off. I even managed to find the clip ring in my driveway. Easy fix. Thanks guys.

This has GOT to be the shortest/fastest PROBLEM---RESOLUTION thread on here EVER.

This makes me hate people slightly less.
