I have a manual, but, prefer automatic. if you ever get in heavy traffic you know what I mean.

Manual - Automatics & A/C are way too hard on little motors like these.
I'm in that category. I once had a manual, and I do know how to drive one properly - but I couldn't get more than 40K out of a clutch due to the inevitable constant shifting in heavy city traffic. So now I stick with automatics. Besides, the Aveo is primarily my wife's commuting car, and that's what she's used to.
Another advantage to automatics with more and more CVT's hitting the market is the highway RPM is usually significantly lower than the manual version of the same car.
EG: even in economy cars, the Chevy Spark and Mitsubishi Mirage use the same transmission (sourced from Jatco). It makes for quieter highway cruising.
I'd still choose the manual for my usual driving.
At age 72 and my wife 54,own ONLY manual transmission vehicles. Anticipating shift points at proper rpm as terrain and road conditions dictate makes us feel we are an extension of the vehicle. Our stable includes my 2011 Aveo 5spd/1LT , 2006 Element 5spd w/ real time all wheel drive, 2003 Toyota Spyder convertible 5spd, 2008 Dodge Ram quad cab v8(gas) with Getrag 6spd (last year), 2014 Porsche Cayenne 6spd (last year). Amen. I have had total shoulder replacements in both shoulders and total(L) knee replacement and still was able drive where I needed to go. Shift it, pedal, or walk, no compromise!
I admire your dedication - fun fleet, too.
Apparently you don't live in a city. :-)
However, that "ancient" Aisan auto tranny has proven to be reliable over time. Compared to more recent and advanced ones (such as CVT) it's not very fuel efficient, except when in lockup mode. But some of us try to own our vehicles 'for the long run'. Probably everything else on an Aveo will fall apart and fail before that A/T does. And that's a good thing. ;-)
Auto in my Aveo because Aisin makes their automatics. These are darn near bullet proof. I wouldn't trust a Daewoo manual box.
I have an automatic since everybody in the family likes to use it.
My personal cars have always been manual as I prefer the driving experience more that way.
Every day driver 08 manual transmission here. I guess for now with the most part no go for a foot & stop it's ok. Other then that there ok.
Manual. I have had 3 Manuals and 2 automatics. The manuals are the best. So much more fun to drive. And it keeps me from texting :) not that I would do that anyway, I mean it's illegal...

Mine is an automatic. Seems to be getting harder to find manual transmissions.
who are you telling? lol Every 10 aveos in the junkyard, maybe 1 or 2 are a manual,
True that. I love mines
5 speed manual transmission 2005 Chevy Aveo hatchback
5 Speed on my 04 Aveo hatchback.
Automatic. It's my lady's car and she can't drive manual, nor does she want to learn. I can drive manual, but I've never owned one personally.
2005 5 speed; Manual for economy, tractors, fun, automatic for semi's, graders, front loaders and city stop and go.
My sweet "Greyman" is a 5spd manual 2011 LT/1LT, as of 4-24-2017, w/40k mls . Every vehicle in our garage is manual; 2003 MR2 5spd, 2006 Element 5spd, 2014 Cayenne 6spd fully manual trans. Planning on trading the 2011 sedan on a 2015 Sonic 5spd, nornally aspirated, and my 2008 Dodge Ram quadcab Big Horn Edition 4X4, 4.7l (gas) with the now unavailable 6spd Getrag manual transmissionl(last year offered).
Automatic on my 2010
Automatic in my 2004 Hatchback. Because its just my commuter and I dislike manuals.
I've had many cars and trucks over the years. The older that I get, the more automatic I go. To me now, standards are for fun and automatics for utility. Now about this "Hold" button.....
never owned a auto car ,but most car in the uk have a stick
Auto on my 2004, works fine for me.
I got a 5 speed y? My wife can't drive clutch lol
^ These days having a manual is also protection against car theft!
(Not suggesting your wife would steal your car!)
My Aveo5 has an auto trans, I chose it because I have back and hip issues that make driving a stick very uncomfortable any more.
I've had about 20 cars and it's been a pretty even mix of autos and sticks.
My 2006 Aveo5 /Kalos RS is an automatic currently. Originally was a 5 speed.
I've got an auto trans in my 2005 Chevy Aveo LS, I have the Auto trans because the manuals around where I live are extremely rare. besides I really like the 4spd auto that the 2005 Aveo has.
Always had a manual. I really want to drive a car. And not just speed up and slow down (simply said). 5-gears are a bit less in this Aveo, I notice that the car would be happier with a 6th gear.
I have an automatic. I learned on a manual but I hyper focus on traffic and other people so much that having the added work of a stick just isn't something I'm comfortable with. Also I do a lot to city driving and being stuck in traffic with a stick sucks. LOL!
Yup. Hardcore stop & go can be a pain.
Some cars have very light clutch pedals (a new Mitsubishi Mirage that I tried is the lightest I've ever used -- it was hilariously easy to use), others have heavier pedals that make it a chore.
Manual. I'm from the U.K. and auto isn't the popular choice it is here in the U.S. I hate that it's hard to find anything truly manual any more. Hubby's cars have all been auto so when they stop making manuals altogether I'll at least know not to left foot brake!
I guess for the US it's logical because of the traffic on one side and long roads with nothing on the other.
I am focused on the road as well (as everyone should o'course). But I like to have something to do under driving. It's only a fraction of the whole drive towards work / parents / friends / events / holiday / etc.
Manual has my preference, but if I had to commute in traffic, I would definitely prefer auto.
I remember my first time driving an automatic, almost slammed my teeth into the dash using my left foot, oops.
Manual. I also have a stock mx83 Cressida which is automatic and I may keep it that way. I prefer manual now but I bought it because manuals are supposed to get 5mpg more than automatic. I like them a lot now though for the utility and simplicity of them especially how stripped down the aveo is compared to cressida.
When I learned to drive, I alternated between my mom's Chrysler Lebaron with an auto and my dad's Jeep CJ-5 with a three-speed manual so that I would know how to operate both. My first (1979 Ford Mustang, not as glamorous as it sounds) and third (1973 Super Beetle) cars were four-speed sticks, then I had a twenty year span from 1997 to when I got my Aveo (10/19/2017) where all my cars were autos. It wasn't something I planned, but because that was what was available when I needed a car. It took a couple days for muscle memory to kick in, but I'm getting the feel for the manual back again.
Nickelbawker, funny you should mention the Cressida. I had a 1983 model from 1997 to 2000. Most luxurious car I ever owned, and sometimes I miss it even now
How did it cost to swap it? Because I'm thinking about swapping it.
