The Kalos Dream

In early 2000, the Aveo and all its cousins were but a dream -- the Kalos Dream in fact.

GM hadn't appeared on the horizon as Daewoo's savior, and the financial situation was grim.

In many articles detailing the struggling Daewoo, the Kalos Dream show car was considered as much a pipe dream as anything... an uncertain end to a very certain financial nightmare.

Daewoo first presented the original Kalos Dream I at the Paris 2000 Motor Show:

I'm not quite sure what they were thinking with the front and rear clips, but they seemed to have kept an open mind:






At Geneva 2002, Kalos Dream II again:





By March of 2003 at the Genva Show, the pre-production KALOS... nolonger a dream (notice the very interesting front nose treatment -- which seems to have presaged the big Audi and VW face treatments.)



The little Aveo and all its other iterations played a significant role in the ongoing vitality of Daewoo -- til GM could swoop it up and ride into the sunset... where we are now.

It was more funk and less cute.

The tail kept getting softened, the black trim haunches over the wheel arches disappeared... but the interesting swage line that turns downward on the rear door appears to have been original to the dream.

if they put that front end on the aveo hands down it would have sold a lot better and been more socially exceptable looking...i dont like the tail lights tho, the ones we have now are pretty sweet...but the front end of that car is really sleek look and fits the aveo while the one we have now isnt that flowing

I actually like where the Aveo ended up, but I do also like the original concept car -- you can tell it's very crafted, serious, masculine.

GM seems to have felt that a "lighter" affect might serve them better, and the Aveo et al were treated to a softer look all around and brighter, less serious color palette.

For those of us older to remember, VW used a very similar color palette in the early seventies, under the advice of the famous artist Peter Max -- see Peter Max image below.
