Not just Aveo: mobility scooter carrier?

What do you need to know about a car's frame and suspension before deciding to install a mobility scooter carrier? I know there's all kinds of scooters and different lifts, so the combined weight will be the important factor. But I don't know what questions to ask to decide if a particular vehicle can handle the weight safely. Probably important also -- can the hitch be mounted securely and safely?

I had a similar question when I bought my car (see Garage). I contacted Chev Customer Care (Holdens in Australia) and spoke to an engineer who made me aware of the limits in the design of the car and its ability to tow a load.

One of the points he raised was the static load on the tow hitch, I don't have the exact figures at hand, however from memory this meant no load greater than about 20kg on the tow ball with a max towing (gross trailer) weight of 350kg for the hitch. See my old Topic: https://www.aveoforum.com/forum/f97/...69/index2.html

My suggestion is to contact Chev in the US and ask for the weights for the state/county where you live.

Edit: Here is an example of what is available in my town that may work with an AVEO: https://ilcaustralia.org.au/products...earch_tree=810 However, note in the "General" description the reference to our State Govt Transport Dept, it may not get the nod.

      Thanks for the info, gclark8.

A few quick conversions for our U.S. friends:

no load greater than about 20kg (44 lbs) on the tow ball with a max towing (gross trailer) weight of 350kg (771 lbs)

the static load on the tow hitch .... no load greater than about 20kg (44 lbs) on the tow ball
So a mobility scooter on a carrier that rides in the tow hitch connector - easily 250 lbs / 113 kg or more - is way too much for the Aveo.

And reading into your other thread, I note there also has to be some accounting for the passengers - which makes sense, because they are also loading the rear suspension.
