Hello to everyone. I'm new here and need help. I have lost my key from my 2009 Aveo, I contacted dealer and they quoted like $600. plus gotta tow the car there!!! This is way too expensive... Any cheaper solutions that anyone has come across maybe? Any advice highly appreciated! Thanks in advance
Does your aveo have keyless entry and the immobilizer? (Because if you do, 90% of the work the dealership is going to be doing is on the Tech2 wiping the old keys and reprogramming the new ones) You might have to either contact a locksmith or be forced to pay that $600 dealership quote.Quote:

I would definitely contact a local locksmith first; that $600 quote is very likely either a ploy to get you into the showroom to buy a car or it’s a “go away, you aren’t worth our time” quote.Quote:

Owners of vehicles that require electronic keys should always have at least 2 TWO programmed keys, because if one is lost you won’t be in this situation. It s much cheaper to have a second key made, than to have a locksmith, or the dealer start from scratch.
Whenever I purchase a new to me vehicle that has these type of keys, I immediately make sure I have three keys total. One to use, one to misplace, and a third for an emergency.
That’s why a little bit after I got Scootaloo, I immediately went to my local Chevrolet dealer amd had them make me 2 genuine keys (she doesn’t have the immobilizer or power locks/keyless entry, so my keys were only $10 each)Quote:

just wanted to post an update, after a long research i did, here is what i came up with.
I guess there is a huge difference between different keys, models, etc.
Also locksmiths and dealers charge different amounts for the very same key.
It helped me save a lot of money (more than $150).
Generally speaking, to get a replacement key, you have three options:
1.Call an automotive locksmith that offers a mobile service for cars. Here is a phone number for a company that have many different locations and locksmiths: 800-223-1453. I think they work all around the US but not sure. Give them a call and ask.
2.Tow the car to the dealer.
3.Order a key online and have the dealer or locksmith cut and program it for you (if necessary).

If you do call a locksmith or the dealer, don’t forget to mention some important information so they will check if they have the key blank and the necessary tools to code you the new key:
1.Year, make and model of the car
2.Your exact location including street address and zip (for the locksmith to find you easily)
3.VIN number of the car located on the dashboard – very important
4.Make sure you can show them proof of ownership – otherwise they will not make you a new replacement key.

thank you for posting replacement key site, i have '09 aveo5 and have not had any luck finding a transponder key, '09 was new change and appearantly didn't last as '10 models and up use same key type, nobody seems to stock that key or are willing to order it..:cool::cool:
The dealers always have increased prices in comparison with locksmiths companies. A friend of mine was charged by his dealer almost $1000 for new keys. I would never pay such money unless I drive a Ferrari. I suggest checking with locksmith near me SW11, and see what they can offer. Their prices range from $80-$300, with additional fees for the trip if necessary.
If you have the 3 button key remote buy a Autel ApMax Ap200 Bluetooth scanner and you can program the keys or remotes to the car up to 5 can be programed got one for $45 shipped I needed a scanner and needed to program the remotes and it was cheaper to get the scanner than pay some one to do it. The only pain is setting up the account registering it you get one free manufacture access an GM covers a lot Chevy Gm Pontiac I only had one key bought 3 extra ones off Ebay for $19 ea. and programed but will have to do all at the same time with original ones as it will remove the original/s that were already stored.
