does anyone know what this part is???

it looks to me, like some kind of weighted rocker arm. im told its part of the shift linkage. its the only broken part on this car im looking at, and i need to know what its called so i can get a replacement piece. its to a 96 VW Golf VR6, and he says its accessed through the engine bay. he tells me its a bolt on piece, but its snapped and needs to be replaced before it can be driven. any clues?

it looks like the shifter arm, that goes on the transmission that those two cables from the shifter will attach to. but i didnt think on that year it was a counterweighted swingarm like that.

the picture is not that great. but i think it is this:

as long as the two cable portions are interacting with the transmission it will be drivable. but it will need to be "forced" into gear.

i think diesel geek makes a short shift replacement?

but the stock piece is available used on vortex..

      for example

so judging from the picture you posted, it looks like it doesnt attach at the top. but in the picture the guy sent me,it looks snapped at the top. is the top of the control free to spin?

the top of the control is the counterweight, nothing more.

but if the counterweight is broken free, odds are the splined hole that actually turns the shaft on the transmission or one of the ends on the shifter cables is broken, the ends on the cable are available aftermarket, but you can use zipties, they will last a while. (had one that was ziptied for 4 years).

the counterweight keeps the shifter from feeling too notchy, but if the two cable ends and the rest of the shifter arm are attached, AND the arm isnt damaged anywhere else, it will be drivable..

if you could get better pictures it would help..

Yeah it is difficult to be certain with just one picture.

if you need a shop, i know a guy who runs a vw shop in coopersburg who will be able to help you out.

his name is Josh, and he owns a shop called "Nothing Leaves Stock"
He is excellent, and very willing to help out, and probably has that part on the shelf, and is "local" to the car.

can i ask how much you are paying for the car?
      my friend is sellings a 2001 jetta 1.8T for @3700.. and a 2000? VR6 GTI for 3000..
both has minor issues. but are runners (the gti is Salvage, mechanics lien not wrecked)

Is your linkage on the back of your motor next to the firewall. I think that is part of the linkage but I'm not sure. My mk2's linkage looks like this:

      Farthest North Aveo: Fairbanks, Alaska
