      Aveo Kalos Barina Safety Ratings

As everyone pretty much knows, the Aveo got the US NCAP highest safety ratings, got ok ENCAP (Europe) ratings, and very, very poor ACAP (Australasia) safety ratings.

A link to the EuroNCAP Aveo Crash Video

Does anyone know if there's a reason why the US Aveo scored the highest rating vs. the Barina getting only two stars -- aside from the obvious: that the tests aren't identical?

Are there substantive difference in the body structure or safety content in the US?

Do the newly (2007) designed sedans have increased safety?

From what I remember, the NHTSA shows 5* frontal, 5* front side and 4* rear side for the hatch and 4* front side and 3* rear side for the new sedan. This, BTW, is for side airbag equipped vehicles.
Are the european and aussie ones tested with side airbags? They may also have stricter guidelines.
If you look at the IIHS site, their ratings for the new sedan aren't great... Hopefully no one has to go through the "true test" for safety...

the barina DOES not come with curtain/side airbags, its stripped out to make it cheaper, that and the australasia safety guidelines are higher (the barina barely made it thru)

This is pretty amazing, given that GM has the capacity to add the side airbags to the vehicle.

The Barina was heavily criticized when introduced because it replace a German sourced designed that scored much higher safety ratings.

I am gonna say it is due to diff rating systems. I know that Japan's is/was much lower than ours.
