      Reliability: 1.4L turbo vs 1.8L normally aspirated

      Does anyone have an opinion which of the available motors, up to n including 2018, would run the longest with least problems (normal maintenance on both?...the 1.4 turbo or the 1.8 normally aspirated. I value your opinion. There are a boat load of 1.4L turbo w/ 6spd on the market, In my mind, I wonder how long the 1.4 will last with a turbo, especially if the turbo is overused for the sake of performance at each stop light. The 1.4 is the same engine, in none turbo form, that is in the spark.

      update...the 2018 LT/RS, (5) spd hatchback in Delano, MN SOLD the same day I posted...go figure!

      Both the 1.4 turbo and 1.8 naturally aspirated engines have proven reliability, but the 1.8 may offer longer-term durability due to its simpler design without a turbocharger. Turbocharged engines can face increased wear and potential issues over time, especially if pushed hard frequently. The 1.8, lacking a turbo, might be more resilient to aggressive driving. However, proper maintenance and driving habits play crucial roles in engine longevity. If you prioritize long-term reliability and are not inclined towards spirited driving, the 1.8 might be a safer bet. Ultimately, regular maintenance and responsible driving habits are key factors in any engine's longevity.

      Very well expressed, and I totally agree! After the warranty has expired and oil changes tend to get "long in the tooth" turbos can cause excessive oil consumption and added possible oil-vapor repairs. To that point, the Audis from '04 to '12 with 80K+ miles are likely to have excessive oil consumption..but only on the 2.0T models...1qt/800-900 miles. The fix" is worth more than the Audi's value. F.B is loaded with Audis, BMWs, Saabs that need outrageous repairs. I'll keep my AVEO. Forgot to add on th Turbo "cons" that since exhaust gasses ae used to run the turbine(s), excessive heat and pressures tend to lead to early head gasket failures as well as corrosive effect due to hot exhaust gasses on related parts and needing more frequent oil changes due to oil contamination as wear increases.

      No truer words were spoken. My Aveo does urban chores, burns zero oil and being a manual trans, is theft proof.
