Turn Signal Cancel
I have a 2006 Pontiac Wave 5 door/5 speed & I suspect part of the Left Turn Signal plastic actuator/canceller has developed a crack as the turn stalk doesn't always cancel. I had this happen on another car many years ago & a drop of crazy glue fixed the crack & it worked fine for years after. With this current car having air bags I am worried about climbing inside the steering wheel. Can someone explain if there is an easy way to get to the signal mechanism? Thanks very much. P.S. Car is coming up for sale & it must be one of the good ones - only repair needed in 100,000kms was the front right wheel bearing replaced - everything else is original including the battery & tires. We are moving cross country & it doesn't make sense to take 2 cars.

You'll be able to take the cover off that column area without worrying about the actual steering wheel. It should split into a top and bottom piece with the removal of a few screws underneath. On my 2010 there were also 2 screws on that cover that were hidden by the steering wheel and were only accesible as you turned the wheel about 90 degrees to each side. They'll be facing you as you turn the wheel. (I can't remember if your 2006 will have those 2 screws.)
For piece of mind, remove the negative battery cable and let the car sit for 15 minutes.

Do remember to remove the negative to the battery. PoisionIvy is right about access but shorting a line and have an accidental explosion can make for a bad day. Once you disconnect the battery, it's would take a miracle to set off an air bag.

Thank you very much for the replies - I'll follow up with a report of what I find

If you can find a replacement, wrap the stalk in a cloth (black) and then use the thinnest crazy glue you can get. And you have a composite!

Thank you for your reply Xintersecty but it is not the arm that is faulty - it most likely is one of the plastic connecting pieces behind the steering wheel.
