buy a head off ebay to save money, and get a head gasket kit, and new belt, tensioner.

set everything to tdc, and pull it apart, and put it together at tdc.

      buy a manual.

If the valves are gone, brace yourself for a $900 repair. Is the car still under warranty?

www.car-part.com. get a full longblock that way it's just a motor swap. Probably about the same amount of $$ as fixing it. Replace the timing belt before putting the motor in.

This method could have you up and running in a few hours once you get the motor.

just out of curiosity how many miles did you have on your engine before the timing belt snapped? I pushed my luck until 91000 miles before I replaced it.

I too was able to wait till at least 90,000 mi before I replaced mine. My dad helped me with it and he even said that the timing belt was still good! I inspected it myself and I saw nothing wrong with it...no cracks or anything. Dad recommended that we replace it anyways as it was the stock belt and many of them have been breaking. PITA to replace on your own, but still doable.

      Re: timing belt went :(

The timing belt fell off my 2004 Aveo too, the tensioner, actually, so the belt with it. I had the belt replaced at 57k, then the engine had to be rebuilt at 68k due to a different common 2004 aveo problem, and at that time the tensioner was replaced. Dealer error? Hmm. Well, I heard a clicking sound too, but briefly before the mishap.

So, the fact that I was traveling at 70 mph at the time of the disaster, as well as the sound of running over gravel, then seeing many pieces of metal or plastic flying out from under my car, mixed with the engine shutting down and seeing a check engine light with an oil light....well....I bet that engine is shot too. Good to have a 100K warranty. The POS has 88k on it now.

      Re: timing belt went :(

didnt need a manual...had the head machined at a local shop here in NH and had 8 bent exhaust valves replaced. everything else was good hooked it all back up and now its idling rough smells like the cat is burning since its been faulty for 3 years now, or perhaps spark/ignition but the head is a real gem its painted and flow tested so it was a pretty good experience overall. the belt didnt snap the teeth sheered off at just over 60k.

would it have been cheaper just to buy another engine?
