So several months ago I changed the timing belt on my girlfriends 09 Aveo with the VVT engine. Well just about a week ago we got a check engine light and I pulled the code. It said slight advance in exhaust Cam. Didn't have any issues til now. I put it in TDC and pulled the top timing cover an the dots pointed towards each other. Started the car and the check engine light was gone. An today it came back on saying the same thing. What gives?
Cam sensor might be going. Or incorrect belt tension.
I thought belt tension was fixed being the tensioner isn't adjustable by a bolt and just pivots. Any way you can elaborate on that???
The water pump can be rotated and provide the fixed tension. The Belt tensioner is a spring that the variable tension. So it terms of physics there is acceleration and deceleration. So when the motor accelerates, the belt stretches and will push back on the tensioner. And when the motor decelerates, the belt looses and will relax against the tensioner.

If it is a US 09 model, the water pump is not in the timing belt loop but is part of the accessory belt loop instead due to the way the engine was redesigned. This is also one of the reasons the service interval on the timing belts in the 09+ was changed to 100,000 miles (as long as it has the ecotech engine)Quote:

To the OP, check your operating oil pressure, the camshaft position actuator, and the camshaft position sensor. If the actuator is not redirecting oil flow properly that could throw the code.
Any chance you could post the exact code number?
