      Timing belt

      Hey guys,

I've been dealing with repairs to my car the last little while and keep forgetting about my timing belt. I bought he car in Nova Scotia back in August with 60,000KM. Do you think it could've been changed then? It came from a lease return via GM. However, I'm now at 122,000KM... I've burnt 11 sets of tires and numerous redlines/clutch dumps. I'm thinking it must've been changed if it's still holding? I just don't have the money for it right now but I'd try and figure out something.

      Thanks,
      Brendan

in km i think the interval is closer to 95k? 96.5 actually. So i doubt it has been done. But you are only 30k km over, some people have theirs last to 100k miles.. most have not.

Is there a way of preventing a valve job if the belt does go? I had a belt go in a 2000 Saturn SL and it was SOHC, and it gave warning signs like before it went it was barely staying on but I kept er to the gas then you could hear the belt unwrap and fall out, the smoke flew out the exhaust and engine and next thing you know it misfires and shuts off.

Sometimes you can get very lucky and not do any damage. Oh and thanks for reminding me, I gotta go get my water pump and timing belt kit lol getting close to that 50000 Mile marker.

I just ordered my timing belt kit off ebay, pretty good deal. $100 bucks, for the belt, pulley, water pump, etc... The parts stores here in Canada wanted over $500 for all of it

Lol that's what the parts guy told me when I picked up my kit today. I know most people seem to change at 50k just to be safe, and that's what I'm aiming for. I am going to pop off one of the covers and take a peek here soon to see how the belt looks soon though. The kit is pricey so I wanted to buy it while I had the money.

Well I'm just going to leave it and pray that it holds up until I have the money to change it, I'll just buy the kit off eBay and then pay my backyard mechanic to do it. Screw Canadian Tire.

So is there anything I should pay attention to while driving to prevent valve damage if the belt does go? I'll have the money for the belt in about 2 weeks, but it's the only vehicle possible to drive right now. 123,000Km...
