Sticky First to Second?

At first I thought maybe it was because this was my first manual, and it still may be that I'm not used to it but I figured I should ask you guys. When I shift from first to second (and second to first respectively) the shift seems sticky and sometimes 'pops' out of gear when I am shifting. 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th etc is silk compared to it. When I'm trying to get up to speed quickly it is rather irritating at times and has made me miss the gear. I'm wondering if its just the transmission or something wrong with my car specifically?

most likely shift linkage, there are a lot of plastic joints on the way to the transmission.
