I just went through replacing the CV Axles while doing my wheel bearings. Usually they start to give you warning when they are going bad due to making all kinds of creaking and cranking sounds when you turn the wheel. 2 things that happen when they fail: The knuckles inside the boots will wear out and fall apart and there is also a retaining clip on the end of the spline that locks it into the transmission that can fail which will allow the axle to disengage from the transmission. The axles you can order and have next day at the local auto store and they run about $90 to $110. The passenger side is more money as it is the longer of the 2. Not hard to change really. Especially if everything was just apart for the wheel bearing replacement. Driving it with only the one side engaged and working I would not recommend unless its low speed just to nurse it home for repair.
