Oil Pressure Situation
Hey All,
New here. I am working on my brother-in-laws Chevy Aveo (2009, I believe) and have some questions about an oil pressure situation.
He changed the oil two weeks ago and when he drove it the filter cap wasn't on all the way and a bunch of oil blew out. We promptly refilled it and fixed the filter cap, but the car had driven a good 5 miles first. Fast forward a week and the oil light is now permanently on, has been for a week. The car smells like it is burning oil, but I can't tell if it is residue from the spill or fresh oil. It seems to still have plenty of oil in it so I am not sure where to go from here. I have read some threads on here that point toward air in the system, a blocked oil way, or the oil pump. Can I get some opinions on how to diagnose this and what to check?
Thanks!
Shane

Which oil light is it? Can you post a picture?

Thanks for the reply. I actually got a look at the car today and it was just the service light
Reset it and that is good. Car is still burning off oil, but I think the smell will fade with time now that it isn't leaking anymore.
Thanks for the help!

Some brake cleaner and rags might help clean off the mess. If he lost enough oil, there may be some now in the spark plug valley, and this could cause problems later with misfires FYI.

engine degreaser would be good way to clean off the oil. its not flammable like brake clean if the then is hot.
