Question Need help resetting ECU 2018 Sonic

      Hi,
I was hoping someone out there can help me with an issue. I’m trying to reset the ECU on my 2018 Sonic and haven’t been able to do it as of yet. I’ve left the battery disconnected overnight with the lights on, I’ve pulled all of the ECU fuses, and I’ve also tried to disconnect both battery terminals and then put a jumper wire between the positive and negative cables for more than an hour. None of these techniques worked, each time I reconnect the battery, all the radio stations presets, the clock, and the steering light and “code 68” remains on the dash. Does anyone know how to reset the ECU?
      Thanks much

You can’t just clear that code, you have to fix the underlying issue. Probably electric steering related.

You absolutely without a doubt physically cannot reset it while the underlying problem persists. I hope this is clear enough.
once it’s fixed, the fault will most likely go away. If not, THEN you can use a scanner to clear codes.

Ok. I completely believe you and understand. Why won’t you or someone else tell me how to reset my ECU? That’s what I’m actually asking for help with.

You have already performed the steps to "reset the ECU" by disconnecting the battery, etc. It appears the sonic stores some data in non-volatile memory (aka, memory that does not need power to retain it's values [like a hard drive in a computer]) which is why you get your presets and clock back.
If you are asking how to do a complete "factory reset"-esque reset that nukes everything including presets you'd probably need dealer level tools, if it's possible at all. At that point it's closer to reprogramming than a reset.

If you are trying to see if that code will go away, it obviously will not until the underlying issue is resolved. When you reconnect everything the car is doing it's own checks and sees that there is a fault and sets the code. No matter how many "resets" you attempt, unless the underlying fault is corrected the message will keep reappearing.

So the reason no one can tell you how to do an ECU reset is because you have already succeeded in doing it. But the fault doesn't clear because there is a problem being detected.
