Metal-on-metal screeching (scraping) sound when hitting bumps, coming from rear area

      2007 Aveo Sedan

The sound just started. Sounds like two pieces of metal being rubbed together to create a high-pitched noise. It is not the trunk latch, because the car still makes the noise when driven with the trunk open. It is also not the rear seat latches.

It only makes the noise when hitting bumps.

Very annoying noise that is driving me nuts.

      Any suggestions?

wheel bearings? is it a "constant" screech, or like a impact screech?

Sounds like something is weak in the suspension, I would start with the bearings, then go on to check the bushings.

I'm guessing it's a bushing. Did you upgrade your bushings or are they stock? If stock how many miles are on them?

Checking the bearings should go first, just put the car on a jack with the tire you want to check off the ground and not locked by a brake or transmission. (wheel chocks of some sort are recommended) Once the tire is off the ground simply spin it, the tire should spin easily, listen for a scraping sound coming from the bearing. If you hear a noise try to move the tire in and out from top to bottom, and side to side. if it wiggles at all, you have a bad bearing. Another easy way to check if you think it's really bad, is with the car on the ground, push the top of the tire hard with your foot. or grab it and shake it. You will notice if the tire moves independent of the rest of the suspension.

Let us know what you find.

I will think of a better signature later.

This noise is in no way mechanical. It is more like a cosmetic noise. It seems to come from the area where the back speakers are in the window. It is a horrid sound. Sounds like something is loose and rubbing against something else. Sometimes it is more noticeable when the bass is higher. It is definitely more noticeable when driving on a bumpy highway.
