Ignition coil

I've been advised that my ignition coil needs to be replaced. Dealership part cost is 10x the cost of the generic (R350 vs R3600 confirmed at two different dealerships).

However, my independent auto electrician is advising to go for genuine parts as the "pirate" parts are dodgy. I don't see any reason he would lie about this, so I am reluctant to go against his advice. I'd still like to know if anyone on the forum has experience with this part or can give a recommendation either way. Thanks for any input.

Try GMPartsonline or Rock Auto, it may be cheaper from the US, even with the freight.

Thanks, I've found the right part after looking in my engine bay and comparing to different ones on GMPartsDirect and our local sources. The wrong part is for the newer Ecotec engine at a cost of 3.6X that for the correct part (by local pricing) and it would not have worked anyway!

I am glad you found the right part! When I looked up your car in "Garage" and then tried to match it in GMpartsonline it didn't quite match. They have a different name for the 2012 AVEO in the US. Here in Aus we still call them Holden Barina, but GM did a model/engine change, so from late 2011 it's called the "TM Barina".

Edit: It may be best use the VIN and/or the Engine Number to confirm with the parts supplier that the right parts are matched to the car. I find the local ACDelco page to be fairly accurate in identifying the right part for most GM cars as it is also used by our local dealers.

The mismatch in revision between the US and other regions has been a source of confusion in a few threads here, I've come to regard even a 2012 South African Aveo as the 2007ish US revision. Anything newer here is called a Sonic and is quite different, though what we call a Sonic was also called an Aveo for a few years in the US.
