How do I Remove The Rear Brake Drums?

Simple but dumb question. How do I get the rear brake drums off my 2004 Aveo? Thanks

I haven't needed to look at the brakes yet on my 06, but on most other cars that I've worked on with drum brakes, there should be two threaded holes on the face of the drum... forget what size, though, M8 or M10 or something. Anyways, you thread bolts into those holes and crank them both slowly and equally which sorta "jacks" the drum off the hub.

It looks like the brake drum might be held on by the center bolt and the bearing is part of the brake drum. In all other cars I have had the brake drum comes right off (after some banging with a rubber mallet).

I removed the center bolt and tried to get the drum off. It didn't want to come off. I stopped at that point and tried to find a repair manual (couldn't find one for the Aveo). So this is my next step.

Yes, there is a nut on the spindle (under the cap)

This is from the on-line manual:

      Removal Procedure

      Release the parking brake.
Operate the brake at least 10 times until the jumping of the adjustment spring on the adjustment nut can no longer be heard on either brake drum.
Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
Remove the rear wheels. Refer to Section 2E, Tires and Wheels. Mark the position of the wheels relative to the wheel hubs.
      Remove the caulking nut.
      Remove the brake drum.

So once you remove the nut, you should be able to whack the drum free somehow. Maybe some liquid wrech around the spindle??

okay lets try again - how it looks doesn't count niether do 2006 aveo's - 2004 (early) are apparently different and "you should be able to whack the drum free somehow" isn't an answer it is a guess. Has anyone actually had this problem and solved it?

04 aveos have a one piece hub/drum. so you need to pull the spindle nut, and take the drum off with the bearings.
