Gas Cover hinge and latch broken

When I picked up my used driver I pointed out to the car salesman that the gas door was looking to fall off and had him remove it. He told me the parts were on ebay, they are but $34 for a hinge? The latch is cheap at $10, so I ordered one and fixed the hinge by using a nail and a piece of aluminum folded and riveted to the old hinge after grinding the plastic pin off.
What idiot designed this 'Gas Siphon' special? What it cost to fix this mess is double the gas price. If I lived in the city I would add an alarm and a switch to the cover so when it is open if the alarm is armed it goes off.
