Fuel filler door not springing open...

Hi,

When I got my Aveo, the fuel door release pin had snapped off - so I bought a new pin mechanism and the release lever underneath the driver's seat now worked. The problem is, when I pull the lever, it releases the fuel filler door, but it doesn't spring open. Unless you're Mr. Tickle and have very long arms, you can't pull up the lever and reach the filler door to pull it open at the same time. Should there be another mechanism inside the fuel filler door that springs it open when you pull the lever and release the locking pin?

To get around this, I have a piece of string fixed to the pull lever - so I can pull the string with one hand and pull open the fuel filler door with my other hand... this is quite amusing for other drivers at the petrol station! I'm shortly going to be selling my Aveo, and I can't really sell it with a piece of string fitted to the lever!

Any ideas, anyone?

Just get rid of the mechanism completely and use magnets to hold the fuel fill door shut and just manually open whenever you need. Its a Chevy Aveo, not a Lamborghini.
