      Engine Timing Re-Learn Procedures

I have been looking through the forums and using the search feature have found several references to the above procedure. People will suggest the task without explaining it or linking to where it can be explained.

Google has been frustrating at best.

      Can someone please explain:

Which years is this required on?
      How is it performed?
Are there special instruments or tools involved aside from a scan tool?

Timing relearn? That is a new one to me, have not run across this yet. Do you mean idle relearn? Or crankshaft relearn?

Here is the idle relearn process:
      1.29.1.
      Turn the ignition ON.
29.2. Turn the ignition OFF for 15 seconds.
29.3. Turn the ignition ON for 5 seconds.
29.4. Turn the ignition OFF for 15 seconds.
29.5. Start the engine in park/neutral.
29.6. Allow the engine to run until the engine coolant is above 85°C (185°F).
29.7. Turn the A/C ON for 10 seconds, if equipped.
29.8. If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transaxle, apply the parking brake. While pressing the brake pedal, place the transaxle in D (drive) for 10 seconds.
29.9. Turn the A/C OFF for 10 seconds, if equipped.
29.10. If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transaxle, while pressing the brake pedal, place the transaxle in park/neutral.
29.11. Turn the ignition OFF. The idle learn procedure is now complete.

The crankshaft relearn process is requested by the OBD interface/tool, so I am not aware of that process. Far as I know from searches, one would need access to a tech2 in order to do the crankshaft relearn. According to the manuals, the crank relearn process is needed when the position sensor is replaced or if it is removed for any reason.

Also a good post from petrified rabbit here: http://www.aveoforum.com/forum/f82/0...81/#post119238

I did a search for 'timing relearn' and found nothing, so you must mean the idle or crank relearn, so this should be of some help.

the crank relearn usually needs a scan tool like the tech2. in the cars ive done it on it sometimes involves bouncing it off the rev limiter. I know for a fact that the Pontiac Bonneville is that way. not good

some involve just revving it to a certain RPM like 3000 or 4000. but as I said you need a tech2 to do that. the harbor freight ones and the like wont work.

Yes, I replaced both crank and cam sensors. So that would be it - the procedure which I suspect is the cause of why I can't get this engine to run right. It's got a 0300 misfire code. It's not the spark plugs, wires or coil. All of those were swapped out and checked. I checked the cam sensor and that's not it. I can't put back the crank sensor as it was bad to begin with. I can use one from my other car. We own an 05 and 06 Aveo.
