      Don't mean to Necro, but this was a Godsend! I bought my 2004 LS Hatchback brand new in August of '04. Its been my daily ever since. I love this little crapbox to the moon and back, as we have both driven to hell and back! I just started having this problem in June/July of this year. Guess I got lucky. I was damn close to getting rid of it, even though I didn't want to. I'm a car guy, but my Achilles Heel is random electrical crap. I stumbled across this today. Low and behold, this is it! Now I can fix this and park my GTO and Camaro again and bring this little red beast back to life. You guys are great!

      Another possible fix

      I've had this problem with my 09 Aveo for at least 2 years. I've just been getting by with a battery powered LED light strip + a speedometer app on my phone. This week I decided to take it to an electrical specialist. I also took a printout of the walkthrough from this thread. The shop had it diagnosed and fixed in under an hour. Cost me $104. They took a different approach, not sure if my splicer box was burnt or not. I have attached an image of the notes they gave me.

      Here is what they wrote on the invoice...

      "Found no power on instrument illumination wire; checked fuse, OK. Found power out of under hood fuse box into under dash fuse box, but no power out of under dash box. Has open in shunt in under dash box. Spliced two wires at under dash box to bypass shunt - lights now working."

      Thank you so much! Those instructions to replace the 101 splice pack with homemade splices worked perfectly on my 06 aveo. The only difference was fewer wires on one side.

      My friend has a 2007 Chevy Aveo that had the right brake light go out. The problem was the bulb wiring harness had one of the sockets burned out. Replaced this harness for about $50 and it worked. About 4 years later the left brake light went out with the same burned out socket problem. Replaced it the tail lights work but this time the left running light doesnt work.

      So I checked the white connector in the under hood fuse tray for burning but it was fine. The interior lights and shift column lights also dont work. The key also wouldnt rotate to start the car but luckily I found the emergency slot to bypass and start car.

      I'm not sure if some of these problems are interrelated or not. Ive included a photo of the burned out tail light harness. In both instances the same dual filament socket burned out. The contact pins on the socket are very close together so its possible the solder on the bulb contacts may have softened up and shorted it out. I would appreciate any help you might provide.

      The dash lights are 'sort of' working on my Aveo. The under hood fuse "Illum Rt" continues to blow, and I can most times change it, and it will work until I hit a bump, when it will blow again. I took the under hood fuse box apart to inspect my 101 splicer, although no burning was noted.

      @jrhirsch - You have linked photos for the brake light wiring harness, but the link goes 404. Is there any way you could send those to me? Would love to check into this option to see if this is the case.

      I also saw potentially the dimmer switch as the issue. When I took a peak up from the gas pedals under the dash, the wires seemed to be alright. Is there any better way to check into this option?
