Yes just replace the switch. I don't think the switches are meant to come apart. I just hope they are easier to change in the newer chevy cars. Try changing one in a early 90's corsica.

Could be the potentiometer on the dash, used to control the brightness.
(Sometimes turned down by small children)

i was thinking the problem could be the contacts in there, but when i took it out and looked at it, i couldnt figure a way to get to the contacts without potentially breaking it. like the switch on the steering column.

Liberal use of Armourall or similar dash treatment will foul things up in there. CRC Contact Cleaner may be the go.

I wonder what happened to the girl that started the topic?

that might be the problem, i do use quite a bit to get the dash extra shiny.
ill see about the cleaner today,
but if not, the cars goin to the dealership tomorrow
      to really figure things out.
i will post what it turned out to be.
theres probably a few more people out there having the same problem.

its in the shop right now, chevy dealer said it was going to take up to 5 days to see it, so i found a local auto electric shop to check it out today. plus their price was 85 instead of 111 for the diagnostic.

and now after some difficulties getting the shop people to check it out for me,
the man says i have a wiring problem.
      kinda dissappointingly indirect.
i guess its not a switch or anything though.
after the 65$* diagnostic (lowered from 85 cause it took so long to see it),
they want another 275 to find and fix the problem for me.
      sound worth it?

275 sounds cheap, but chances are a very large some of that is the labor to look for a problem that could be fixed with a piece of electrical tape. Or you have a pin that is loose, that's a little more involved but likely still repairable at home. If you have the time and patience to look into it yourself, save some cash. If not, 275 shouldn't be to bad.
