      2004 aveo wont start

so its my first time using forums but here we go i got a 2004 aveo with about 95000 miles. the check engin light was off and on till the day before it wouldnt start. it shut off while driving but would only be on after you would start the car. when starting it would shake bad for 30 sec go away and run fine. after parking it over night the next morning it wont turn over now it trys but wont stay running. at about 74000 mile the timing belt went and i had the head rebuilt but been running good till now. it has compression avge 160, spark plugs all spark, and i have 50 psi on the fuel rail. also i put a code reader ok it and got p1781, that was the only code so i wipped it and it didnt help. any ideas and or help please.

      thanks

      andy

How about TSB 050601030? Seems it wouldn't be valve related after the head work, but does throw the code you got:

1.6L L91 INTERMITTENT MISFIRE COLD DURING DECELERATION OR STEADY STATE HIGHWAY DRIVING AFTER COLD START WITH DTC'S P0300, P0700, P1781 AND/OR U0401 SET (REPLACE VALVES AND VALVE STEM SEALS) *TT UPDATED 11/02/07 *NJ

is there any easy way to check the valve stem seals to rule that out. maybe the place i had rebuild it didnt do a good job who knows. is there other things i could try check to see if its somthing else thats making it throw that code?

I had a similar problem. Replaced both the spark plugs and the wires at the same time and now it runs fine. Plugs are reasonably priced locally but wires are only cheap on the internet at places like rockauto. Good luck.

If you have bad valve stem seals you will notice smoke out of your exhaust right after you start the engine up after it has sat overnight.

Have you looked/checked for a vacuum leak. Some of the small coupling hoses were already starting to crack through on our '04. A good leak on one of these or other points can cause many of the symptoms you described.

Don't know the details of the TSB, but suspect some oil fouling on the plugs would be another symptom of leaking stem seals.
