Ok, so basically the car will start, idle for a few seconds, stumble(die for an instant), then recover before the engine quits(usually). Then on other occasions it will start at a somewhat high idle (1500RPMS) and hold it for quite a while.
Any ideas on what this might be?

Have you checked for vacuum leaks, cracked intake piping? any codes?
Most common issues are primary o2 sensor, but that doesn't mean it is your issue. The Intake plastic often cracks and causes a reading error for the IAT sensor and or map sensor readings. You may also only have a temp sensor issue. Is this only at start up or does the car not run, is not drivable?

check those things listed, if you are considering narrowing it down to the idle circuit. then it would more likely be the vacuum leak, or the temp sensor. But it does not rule out any of the other possibilities.
