Future Aveo to have 6 spd auto trans

A dozen 2011 Chevrolets to offer 6-speed automatics

It took awhile to get used to the six speed in my other car after having 4 speeds most my life. I personally wouldn't mind one of these tranny's if they can mate up to my current engine and the price is right.

That'd be great. I know the new Aveo RS with the 1.4T package is supposed to have a 6-speed manual, but finally an efficient option for those Auto guys...that'll be great.

Funny thing is, the GM press release posted with that blog article doesn't actually mention the Aveo by name. Only the blog writer mentions it, which makes me wonder where he/she got the info.

Aveo?
Do you see any Aveo on that list? They said that 75% of their line will have six speeds. That leaves 25% that will still have slushbox trannys. Remember, Aveo is at the bottom of the Chevy line. :(

If they are offering it in the Cruze, which is basically the new Aveo Sedan, sharing the same platform as the Aveo5/Aveo RS, then is should be offered in the hatchback as well...I would think anyways. We shall see.

I don't really see the logic behind a 6-speed automatic on the Aveo. The 6-speed would be heavier, have more internal parts, be more expensive and I highly doubt they can make it more efficient than the 4-speed that's in it now. We'll see.

It's not hard to give the car both better acceleration and better fuel economy by adding more gears - and the modest additional weight penalty is offset by the performance increases.

FYI, the new Ford Fiesta coming this summer will be available with a 6-speed (auto).

Considering GM is moving the Aveo more upmarket, they have room (price wise) to add the more expensive components if they want to. The competition is going to 6-speeds, and the tighter CAFE regs encourage it, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it as an option at some point (even though it may not yet be on the list in the GM press release).

I've read in a couple of places that the next gen Aveo doesn't share the same platform as the Cruze. (Delta II vs. Gamma II). Of course (1) you can't believe everything you read on the internet :), and (2) that doesn't mean they can't share drivetrain bits anyway.

But the Cruze is apparently a somewhat bigger car than the next Aveo sedan (if a sedan is coming - we've only seen computer renderings so far - no spy shots or show cars).

The Chevy Cruze has already been out for a while in other parts of the world. There's a bunch of guys in Singapore that drive them on another forum I frequent.

what about a cvt? good or bad idea? reliable ? lots of cars have them now but doesn't make it good

Just a question but is a 6 speed auto tranny even needed on a 1.4L engine that is coming in the new aveo? It would be pretty nice though to have a 6speed tranny

CVTs are great. You can basically make the engine run in the best possible rpm for fuel efficiency...then if you floor it, you can get better torque multiplication than a traditional torque converter.

For example, the CVT in a ski-doo has a range of 8:1, all the way to .8:1. Whereas a car normally has 3:1 to .8:1. Unfortunately, in theory, they can be the most efficient transmission, but in practice, they aren't.

It's "needed" if GM wants to appear competitive with the other manufacturers that are going with 6-speeds.

Technically you could gear a 5-speed to give you good acceleration in 1-4 and then good cruising fuel economy in 5th, but most drivers wouldn't like the tall "jump" up to 5th. And most people are too brain dead to downshift from top gear when they need acceleration (which is why they give us so many cars spinning at ridiculous RPM cruising in top gear).

The extra 6th makes it more consumer friendly.

I just hope GM doesn't go the way Ford is with the new Fiesta: the six-speed automatic is geared to get better economy than the manual.
