If they had reconfigured the A/T shift point of its going into torque converter lockup (mistakenly thought of as overdrive) sooner, at a speed lower than 40+ MPH, it would get better MPG. But then the car wouldn't be able 'to get out of it's own way' - in terms of its having any reasonably decent acceleration in that speed range.
