Here's a graph of what MPG (U.S.) you could roughly expect to get at a steady speed (cruising) in similar conditions with a 2004 automatic.

Readings were taken with a ScanGauge calibrated to this car, repeated over the same test route, with the reading reset & read at the same points along the route.

Note the best fuel economy is in the highest gear with the torque converter locked at the lowest engine RPM. Speed kills... MPG! :) Once in top gear, it only goes down as MPH goes up. (This would be the same trend for manual transmission Aveos too, though the MPG figures would be a bit higher at a given speed.)

A/C was off for the test.

Oh, and as for why there is a jump in MPG between 45 & 50 mph?

If I could get HALF the mileage of what that graph says, I would jump up so high, I would see Seattle from Fort Lauderdale! I cant break 19mpg to this day, in my auto 2006 Hatchback. Never once past 20mpg in over 6 years. Thats driving like either a 90yo lady, or a kid hopped up on meth. Makes no difference, its 19mpg. Period. Thats why I bought this car, to get these numbers, never got close to them to this day. Anyone wanna buy a 2006 with 23K miles?

Oh man. Me too! I can't get over 21 MPG (avg) no matter what I do to the car, no matter how I drive! (I do use the airconditioner however).

That chart is the mileage you get at that exact speed on flat ground. Accelerating and stopping use considerably more gas (thus lower city ratings than highway ratings). If you spent your entire tank cruising at the speeds above you'd see roughly that mileage. I can attest that its perfectly possible with the right driving techniques. I always get around 40 mpg with my Aveo, but I drive about 45 mph most of the way to work, so its fairly ideal.

I can maybe get 25 mpg, and I drove down to nearly an empty tank to see that result in my 2005 automatic. I'll hit 70 on the freeway and typically stay there, only going higher to break away from crowded traffic. I do a lot of short trips here and there in the city, but I usually get up to 40-50. I know city driving eats up a lot of gas waiting at lights and stopping at signs, but I honestly don't think that could cost me 20 mpg (equivalent of half a tank). I know there are things I can do to improve upon it - get better tires, change fluids and plugs and etc etc, but I just don't see how all these things combined could ever add up to half a tank worth of lost fuel.

Either I'm severely underestimating the impact a few seemingly minor faults and certainties or there are some highly inflated false claims put out by Chevy.

It completely can eat up all that mileage. I mean look at all the new cars even with their '40 mpg highway' ratings, but barely eeking out mid to low 20s for city mileage. That is the penalty for idling and using your brakes so much. Commuting in a city takes rediculously small amounts of power when you look at it vs highway driving. This is one reason hybrids and electric vehicles get so much better city mileage than normal cars, because they can recoupe that braking energy, and they don't idle while waiting for a light. It really does eat up almost half your tank of gas.

Everyone blames me for my poor mileage. Because I only drive like 3 miles a day,'it doesnt get up to top engine temp.,it is all the stop and go,it is all the city driving,etc...' I still say it should give me low 30's with the way I drive, not like a nut. If I was driving like a 18yo zooming around, and carrying around tons of junk in my car, then maybe low 20's. It is old engne design and I accept it.
But to think I gave up a nice 'collectable' Ranger Edge for this car, to save money during the first 'oil crisis'....and I got better mileage in my turck with a big V-6, and it would now have maybe 30K miles on it. Well, this one stays with me, till it doesnt run or it gets crushed by someone. Its paid off, and still 99% reliable, cant do much better than that.

Not going to get good mileage in any vehicle in those conditions. My mom (who literally drives like a granny! :D ) got low 20's MPG in her Corolla in similar use.

tire inflation is critical as well! I went one tank of gas with under inflated tires on my 94 Metro, the result was 6mpg - it was low by about 8psi or so, everything else was my typical driving, timing on the engine is critical also - I did an engine swap out not to long ago, it run fine (so I thought) for about 3 tanks of gas and the MPGs were in the mid to high 30's. I set the timing correctly and now I am currently getting and average of about 44mpg. It's funny to see how much little things do effect the MPG.

The best mileage I have ever got was on a 560 mile trip at 68 to 75 MPH. I had just had a fresh synthetic oil change and a set of plugs and wires. 32 MPG(US) for the trip. Most of the time I get 25MPG(US). Since I got 18 MPG(US) in my 1974 Ford Brougham with a 450 cu inch engine, I consider this to be atrocious. I only do about 10,000 miles a year and the cost to operate is 54 cents a mile. I think I will be returning to a larger car in the future.

Oh, lucky, lucky you. You are driving at that quintessential 'sweet spot', exactly where the automatic TC lockup occurs (at 45 mph) with a warm engine and you don't have to stop or slow for traffic, stop signs, idiot drivers, etc.

Let's revise it to say that its perfectly possible with ideal conditions, as you have demonstrated. You are lucky enough to have those conditions occur daily, or with regularity, hence your superlative results.

For the rest of us, our 'real world' MPG sucks, no matter how hard we try. :hmph:

Well today was my first drive after purchase and I got 30 mpg. There was a strong wing and up and down small hills with a
little city driving. I must admit I did kick it a little testing out the power or lack there of but I think I can do better by setting the cruse control at 60 mph. Glad I found this forum.

Just wanted to share on my 2005 aveo stick shift, my record is 450, yes, 450 miles to a tank. That was going 55-60 mph from California to Arizona which is actually an increase in elevation, coming to roughly 42-43 mpg's. THis was in the dead of night with no AC on, and following large groups of semi trucks most of the way.

I regularly get 365 miles to the tank, freeway driving, going 90-95 mph to work, and 60 mph on my way home. It is 85% highway driving.

When I lived in the city and commuted in crowded streets, I would still get around 315-330 miles to a tank, driving rather aggressively.

It would have been interesting to stretch that graph out to see what MPG the Aveo was delivering at 90-95 mph!

I would love to get those kind of MPGs.
I usually get just short of 27mpg but if I try REALLY HARD to drive like an old lady and take my foot off the gas whenever I'm going down a hill or anything of the sort, I can get about 30-31 mpg but that's rare.

It says Tucson, AZ... I bet gas is even higher in CA, glad it's still under $2.50 here.



I've put few miles on my newly acquired '09 Aveo5 manual trans and so far, so good. I filled my tank and reset one of the trip meters, drove till just under the halfway mark and refilled it. It took 6.68 gallons and took me 209 miles, 31.27 mpg isn't too bad. My driving consists of 75% hwy driving with A/C in the afternoons and I don't drive conservatively. I drive the speed limit or up to 5 mph above it and actually maintain my speed up hills(pet peeve). Coming from a car that averaged 14.4, I'm happy.

This is good :D:D... Here in Serbia, I work entire month for 423,6 USD, and I hold MS In biochemistry (no, Im not lab tech, I am highly qualified scientist) and pay twice as more for a gallon of fuel. So I installed LPG conversion, to have a little cheaper ride... Here LPG costs as gas in US.

My mileage with LPG and gas is 8,5 L-9 L/100 km (about 28 mpg) for LPG and about 7,5 L (31 mpg) on gas only. Mainly highway driving, but in the morning rush I can prolong for up to an hour in heavy city traffic.

I have noticed that LPG conversions are popular in some contries.

They used to be fairly common in Canada - I remember a lot of taxi companies used to do it in Toronto when I was a kid.

Not so much now. They drive a lot of hybrids though.

First time hearing that an aveo exists running on LPG, Out of curiosity where do you put the tank?

Figured being cylinders that you couldn't fit much in the envelope where the old tank was...

You do not remove the fuel tank, you put a toroidal LPG tank in the place of spare tire. You can also put the larger cylindical tank in the trunk, but you loose space and rear seat bending.The car runs on both fuels very good, although it looses 10-15% of power on LPG (could be less if you have a brand new system like I do, and tune it good). LPG is used in the same percent more as is loss of power, but it burns cleaner and it is more eco-friendly. Also, since Aveo has a MAP engine, the system must be installed by professionals and checked regularly for vaccum leaks, because if you have one, it wreaks havoc on LPG driving (and also gas, but to a lesser extent).

How does switching fuels work, is there a valve under the hood or just a button in the cab?

Also is the transition seamless as in can it be switched while the engine is running and in motion?

Actualy, valve is in the trunk with the tank. I will take a photo and post it. Maybe we should open a new theme for this... Under the hood there is evaporator, pressure sensor injectors connected to intake manifold (drilled into it ) and LPG computer. The switching goes automaticaly, unnoticeable, but sometimes there is a subtile twitch when throttle is released at higher rpm. Sometimes you feel switching from LPG to gas, when the tank goes empty.

I'm currently getting mid 30s from my manual 2010 sedan LT. I have broken 40 on long trips. Mostly off highways but reasonable roads. Presently fighting the multitude of construction on my commute so it's hit and miss. Never used the cruise control. I want to drive the car, not the other way round. LOL

I like cruise if the road is straight & flat. Otherwise, I'll drive.

NGK V-Power plugs I believe increase mileage while in good condition over plugs with thin electrodes or multi posts. Not sure if it's the best for the Aveo but I'm also using them in my 90 Cressida.
