Is it bad gas or what??

I have a 2009 Aveo LT 1.6 automatic. I drive like an old man and generally get 34-39 mpg. The problem is, every once in a while (it seems like every 3rd tank full) my "check engine light will come on (not blinking), my gas mileage will dip to around 20 mpg, the exhaust will stink really bad (rotten eggs). Am I getting bad gas? Is this hurting anything in my engine? Usually, when I refill, the light will go out after about 50 miles and my mpg will be bck to normal.

Try changing your fuel filter? Have your fuel system cleaned and checked? that is strange.

your code is what will tell you the issue.
ignoring it not only wastes gas but could really damage something.
it would also point us toward a fix.

I know this may sound dumb but how do I check the codes?

go to autozone or other place like that, they will scan it for you and tell you what they are. You can also buy a scanner as well, maybe $20 on ebay that does the same thing as well.

Thanks for all the advice fellas. I did end up taking it in to the local Chevy dealer. It seems I knew somebody who was good friends with the shop foreman there. They had to replace two oxygen sensors and I have run through two tanks of gas since then and it has run like a top, Hopefull that did it. Thanks again.
