Umm wrong. Sludge happens at high temperature, not at high load. I happily shift into 5th at 35mph, no lugging. Mind you, the streets I take are pretty flat. I can keep up with traffic no problem. Traffic on the main streets I take rolls along at 40-45mph (in a 30 zone)
I misspoke in that sludge is primarily due to cold weather stop & start driving (short trips) which increases oil contamination.
But lugging is to be avoided due to premature engine wear.
Re: 2005 Pontiac Wave: New Economy Record
Well, after some much needed air in my tires and driving like a granny (sorry to any grandma's here) I was able to hit 7.1L/100KM - 33MPG...
Better but I think I'm doing a lot better on this tank... Will keep you posted... Man, the air did make a difference but I also changed my driving style a bit. (not much as I'm a cheap bastard when it comes to wasting gas)
Re: 2005 Pontiac Wave: New Economy Record
When I first got mine I couldn't believe how bad the mileage was, I could barely do 350km with a full tank. After doing some maintenance I was able to do well over 400km, but still found it was pretty bad.
I find that if I keep it revving under 2400rpm or so, and keep as constant speed as possible, i can average about 150km on $10 of gas which comes out to approx 35mpg
that does include some city driving, but very slow accelerating, keeping constant speeds revving low as much as possible, etc. very very boring driving!
if I drive "normally", I'd be hard pressed to get even 25mpg.
Re: 2005 Pontiac Wave: New Economy Record
^^^ Man I understand! We get the same with our 09 Accent Sport also...
So right now, my odo reads 420KM's and I'm about 2 needle thicknesses below the 1/2 mark. I'm doing very well on this tank! It looks like I will hit 600KM's on this tank! :D

The furthest I've had mine was 642km. The light had been on for about 50Km...I pulled into the first station I saw.

I don't think an Aveo is ever capable of 35mpg in the city. More like 20-25 is you are lucky.
You might want to check your calculations. They seem way off the mark.

I get the same mpg as one man jam so his numbers are dead nuts on. I have heard it go both ways for people... some get such bad mpg in their aveo and others are just lucking out...we are in the lucky bunch! :D

What is your definition of "city" driving? Maybe that's an important aspect. :?
Re: 2005 Pontiac Wave: New Economy Record
northernaveo wont be able to answer you question, he is banned.
Re: 2005 Pontiac Wave: New Economy Record
Just to add insult to injury, banned NorthernAveo said "you can't get 35 in the city"...
And I say you could do it no problem (with a 5-speed), but it would require some unconventional driving techniques. (Engine off whenever it's not being used to accelerate the vehicle, basically.)
