very nice, wish we had that here. how well does the diesel hybrid improve fuel economy over the traditional diesel?
Too early to say, only had it for nearly 3 days. But the mild hybrid seems to function exactly as advertised, when I engage the eco button located below the shifter, it's on. When I stop at a stop light or traffic, and put it in neutral, and foot on the brake, the engine stops instantly. When I put my foot on the clutch again, it starts right away. GM and some other reports I have read says it can add 5-10 percent on the already great fuel economy of the diesel engine. Kudos to GM for finally coming out with it. As many have said, I wish too they would come out with it in North America, it seems to be a great engine in a nice car.
Nice car!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the diesel comes in a version without start/stop, right? Its basically being put on more and more cars in Europe (non-hybrids) and is just starting to make its way to the US in non-hybrid vehicles. They just use a beefed up starter designed to handle more starting cycles.
Yes Daox, both versions, the 75 hp 5 speed manual LT, and the 95 hp 6 speed manual LTZ both have start/stop. Beefed up starter works great. I usually have the tunes going, and really, it's hard unless you listen to know it's not running. Of course you know it's a diesel, more growling then the gasoline version, but still pretty darn quite. I do mostly city driving, couldn't justify the extra price for the LTZ over the LT, only difference is 6 speed, plus 16" tires and fog lamps and parking sensors. I got the dealer to throw in the parking sensors, (a must here) for free.
I've driven some petrol/electric hybrid cars - they all have start/stop as well. But those cars re-start the engine using their big electric motors, so you never hear a "conventional" starting sound of a 12 volt starter motor.
When your tunes are off :) do you hear your starter motor? I imagine since the engine must be warm before the start/stop will function, the engine fires up nearly instantly. So you probably don't hear much of the starter motor.
No matter what the situation. It's fu...d up that the Chevy won't bring anything to theUS
Well, don't forget they're supposed to be bringing the Cruze diesel to North America this year or next ... Which means it could theoretically go in the Aveo here too... I mean Sonic.
I think GM would agree...except for the "won't" part. The cost (monetary & reduced fuel economy) of bringing a diesel car to the US makes it unprofitable in most cases. If it was just a matter of loading up a boat and shipping 'em to the US, they'd already be in showrooms here.
A BIG hurtle for the American Car Industry to get over is bringing the American public around to the idea and common sense of a manual shift transmission. Manual shift transmission vehicle (with the exception of performance/sport cars & med. duty trucks) sell VERY poorly if at all on most dealer lots. The high cost of the diesel option is also a big turn off. Many STILL believe that diesels are underpowered and noisey.
I will have to hand it to GM.........they are FANTASTIC at bringing cars POOR quality, difficult to work vehicles on to market that most people DO NOT want. :rolleyes:
You should get it tuned by Trifecta! Hello better economy and more power if you do! He's got quite a few sonics and cruzes tuned already as well as my 2010 Aveo5. Its more than worth it!
The start/stop system works perfectly, exactly as advertised.
When I pull up to a traffic light, or in traffic, I simply put it in neutral, foot on brake, and it stops instantly. When I put my foot back on the clutch, it starts right away. The car is very well insulated for sound, so to hear whether it is off or not, I had to mute the music in order to know if the engine had indeed stopped. At idle, it runs very quite.
It's CO2 emissions are rated at 95 g/km, extremely low, much lower then the gasoline version of the Aveo/Sonic. It's also rated energy level A here in Turkey/Europe, with a rating of combined city/highway of 3.7 litres of diesel per 100 km. City rated at 4.2 litres per 100 km, and highway at 3.3 litres per 100 km. It is taxed on our yearly "car tax" here in Turkey at the lowest rate because of this. If I lived in London, it would be exempt from the Congestion Tax for London because of it's low emissions, and also would be exempt the yearly UK car tax.
With this mileage, I should get around 1000 or so km's per tank of 45 litres on combined driving.
This is the 4th Aveo I have had, the first two being a 2004, 2006 automatic Aveo sedans back in Canada, and the 3rd being a 2010 Aveo automatic sedan I bought here in Turkey. They are nothing like or can compare to the new Aveo/Sonic, especially the diesel. Yes it is manual, a bit more of a pain in the city, but the trade off for mileage, help to the enviroment is all such a bonus.
Gas and diesel are very, very expensive here in Turkey, but euro diesel, for a Euro 5/6 emission class engine, the clean stuff, is quite a bit cheaper then gasoline, because of the taxes. The diesel Aveo has a very efficient particulate filter as well. Most people convert their gasoline engine cars to dual fuel, LPG/gasoline, but then on a new car, unless factory installed, that invalidates the engine warranty, plus I don't relish the idea of driving with LPG in my back end.
This is not a BMW or Volvo by any means, but in a country of small diesel engine cars, with a huge selection, this is a huge step forward by GM to take on the likes of Renault, Citreon, Peugeot, Hyundai and Ford. Fiat doesn't really factor in, as they seem to be very cheap and still the "Fix it again Tony" car I remember as a kid in Canada.
The Cruz is a really big seller here, having been out for about 4 years now, and with the new model this year, really selling well. The crossover Captiva is already the biggest selling crossover here. I am extremely impressed with the fit and finish of the 2012 Aveo diesel, the engine is sound and more then able to tackle the hills and mountains here, and the mileage is everything I had hoped for an more. Just my opinion, but couldn't be happier.
Very nice mpg ratings. For us on this side of the pond the conversion is below. Keep in mind these are European test cycle standards which always rates their cars higher than the same EPA numbers. Still, very respectable.
City = 56 mpg
Highway = 71 mpg
Combined = 64 mpg
Thanks Daox for the info and especiallly the conversion, keeps us all on a level playing field with numbers, lol. Hopefully, and I have every reason so far to believe it, it will reach or come very close to these numbers.
A couple of pics of my Aveo taken yesterday after a nice drive down the Cesme peninsula to Cesme, Turkey from Izmir.

Wow thats really nice! i wish we had the diesel over here!
Looks like it was a lovely trip.
75 horsepower seems a lil tooo week :[
It may seem that way, but have you driven a diesel car? My sister has an 03 Jetta TDI. It is only rated at 90 hp and it weighs in at 3000 lbs. You would never even notice that it only has 90 hp if you didn't know. The low end torque of the diesel gives you some more pep where you actually need it for daily driving, low rpms. IMO how they drive is actually nicer for daily driving than a gas engined vehicle that you have to rev up higher to get power out of.
Yeah diesel engines are a different beast all together, it is too bad we do not have too many options for it here :(
"Torque" is what you drive. HP is what most people (in North America) "buy" though. :)
Consider the Sonic: 2 gas engines to choose from, and they have the same HP rating. Seems strange, no? But the turbo engine has more torque - more fun & better fuel economy.
I am so sick of these US car companies. Even when they use our money to save their skin, they wont give us their best products. It's always reserved for the rest of the world. Pretty rediculous.
i have a friend who had a diesel jetta too and it sounds nice' yet thanks for explaining wat diesel cars can do i never understood that :X , andd well in my opinion they got it ups and downs diesel cost a lil too expensive nowadayys but u save up on gas which on normal cars like an aveo u need to hit the pedal past 2500 rpm in order to move fluently..yet normal gas is cheaper but if u are the type of person who hits the pedal to the medal it is good still lol.... anyways do u think the low horsepower specs for cars may be somewhat misscalculated?
Diesel is more money, but it has now "fuel" per gallon, so in the long run, diesel is usually better mpg wise (the aveo gets 30 or so on average, a diesel one might get 40 for example).
Though, horsepower is what 90% of what Americans want, and diesels do not have it (they need turbos to make power like that), they just do not sell here. Of course though, the Sonic got a big power increase from the Aveo and people still hate it.
Not to thread hijack, but does this mean we will see 1.6 tune availability from them?
Also I agree with the above, most people either don't care about torque or have no clue what it means and just look at the horsepower numbers. That's why my Lumina surprised people, it only had 160HP but it had 180torque at low rpm to get it moving.
Not more lumina talk... good god.
The tune for the aveo would be nice to have, i would like input too.
Well that Diesel stuff would be great' since equivalently is a lightweight car, even a standard aveo is pretty gud in swift moving along the highway without the need of going against the speed limit at higher mph... anyways a tune would be great i would look forward in making my 1st gear a little longer to get to second :)
Oh lordie do I miss my Lumina, such a beast :D
I would love to figure out a way to get a lot more torque under my belt.
I mean I don't even care about speeed... I would just like to be able to merge
in traffic if you follow me :D
Downshift/floor it ;)
Can't down shift like that in a Auto Trans... maybe if we could just convert it to standard :P
I do it all of the time when I need to speed up (put hold on, then D4 to 2).
But yeah, a manual conversion is a lot of work, I would just buy another car before I did that.
That was my thoughts exactly... And I guess I never thought about using the hold button unless going up a hill. Usually the problem is not achieving high revolutions its jsut getting speed.... but then again I do have a large amount of car audio weight in the back seat... you know a few batteries (80lbs a piece) A bunch of steel (like 300 lbs worth), wood(about 100 lbs) I havent even done the subs and amps yet... geesh :P
but Maybe the lottery and buying a faster car would be more likely then getting this thing supercharged or anything...and heaven forbid as a manual :P
haha I have a 10" in the back, but the box and amp only weigh 60 pounds or so, I could not even fatham that kind of weight :D
One of my team mates - his box in his land rover was just north of 2300 lbs... we had to but a semi-truck axel and bus springs on it. We can get it up to 18 mph!
But I do competition audio (SPL) so I kinda go above and beyond. I can post some pics if you wanna see the build so far :D
Started a new thread in audio ( http://www.aveoforum.com/forum/f84/a...do-aspl-13497/ ), I will try and track more updates through there. I have done so many modifications in my car for audio sake it's ridiculous. BUt I will be posting there thanks :D
Yesterday I loaded up my Aveo with stuff for our summer home, it was totally packed, rear seats dropped, filled to the top, even the front passenger seat and floor. I took the "autobahn" here to near our summer home, and had no problem at all doing the 120 kph speed up and down some big rolling hills, and pushed it a couple of times to 160 kph just to see what it was capable of. It even cruised at 160 quite nicely. From the exit near our summer home to it is 26 km along a very twisty and hilly coastal road with lots of s curves, etc, and it attacked them with confidence, the stability control, brakes and Continental tires were great. Had the a/c on the whole time too as it was near 34 C, no problem for the engine. The more I drive my diesel Aveo, the more I am learing how wonderful a car it is. Edited to say that in the hot weather with the a/c on, it will start itself at a traffic light after about 30 seconds, sensing it needs the engine going for the compressor, but if it is shorter then that, or a/c off, it stays off until the clutch is engaged.
