Im with you on the Stetsom, i run the 2k5D in my aveo, tiny amp and tons of power

Stetsom is nice, definently the best bang for your buck. I've used Bravox Audio components before, they are nice too. I'm a pretty dedicated fan of MB Quart. Very nice with excellent sound quality, performance and they are resilliant as hell. I blared mine when it was -50 every morning on the way to work before my truck warmed up and never once blew a speaker. They are a bit on the expensive side though, but companys like stetsom and a few of these others ^ will show you quality doesnt always cost what you would think.

Hey how does an aftermarket HU fit? It looks to me like the factory radio has a built in curve to it? Does that make the aftermarket one stick out some?

You have to buy the dash install kit. The factory radio slants out on the top. This photo was borrowed from LarsBud's Red Max album:
