Well I can answer this If your car has keyless Entry then yes I tried to take the key to Walmart here is what they said take the key to the dealer. Well the dealer said it would cost $ 85.00 for the key and another $40.00 to program the key to your car. I only have the two that the dealer gave to my mom in 2006 She flat out told me to never loose them.

And how exactly is the coded key related to the starter (in the topic)?

Also, if you have a first gen SVM with no factory alarm, (not sure about the second gen), then it most likely came with a simple key without a chip.

i thought he was talking about the "chip" system gm used on older cars and such like cavaliers? maybe. There would be a little block on the key, but that is the old models

Tell me your year and model and I'll find out.

My car is a hatchback and I have a chip in the key, When the car was purchased Remember that the SVM Didn't have cruise or Keyless entry. The Aveo I have is a LS Hatchback with Remote Keyless entry in order to get cruise control on the car we had to get Keyless entry. Then a month later my mom wanted to get a key made and the only way was to take the key to the dealer along with the car and have another key made but it would cost $135.00 to make the key and program it. Don't bother asking Walmart or some other place to do it They will not do it all they will say is TAKE IT TO DEALER. To show proof I have two pictures of the key. And please No one get snippy about this.

What year? My 06 has keyless and no chip. I believe 08 is the year all cars sold had to have chipped keys.

Having a remote key and a chipped key are different things.

yup. I have the same keys as dragonwarrior2016...no chip. It's expensive cause the keyless entry remote is built in

So the only way to check if dragon warrior has a chip is to get a key made from the fob without the remote in it and try to start it with it. The one without a remote built in should only run you about 20 on ebay.
If it works, you will have yourself a key that opens and starts your car, you'll just have to lock the doors with the door lock button from the inside before you lock your car.
If it doesn't, you're out 20 bucks and you know you have a chipped key. You will also have a spare key in case you lock your keys inside and your battery dies. :P

For your information I had it tested already and it does have a chip. The service tech at the dealership examined it and took it apart and there was a chip but he was kind enough not to charge me for the battery in the key.
