Heater Core Replacement
Hey, I just loaded my Aveo manual from Ebay, (very complete for $18) and am seriously planning to replace my hatchback heater core. Has anyone done this in his own workshop?
One of the steps requires "recovering" AC refrigerant - haven't done that before. Any special (chevy only) tools required. Is this a weekend job? Raysaveo

you need an A/C recovery Machine to actually recover the refrigerant (to reuse it). It works like a vacuum pump to suck it all out of the system.. Depending on how much you can do in a weekend and your ability, yes. its a weekend job, could bean afternoon job if your REALLY good. (Now I replaced a transmission in a 4x4 truck yesterday afternoon, took about 5 hours of laying on my back)
Make sure you line the floor and your seats with plastic and duct tape, the heater core is full of coolant, and it would suck to spill it all over..

Do you think it is possible to have a local shop recover the refrigerant, drive home, and have them recharge when I'm through?

yes, a recovery and charge should be one service as well.. like $80-100. Just dont run the a/c in the mean time.
