      Question CV Halfshaft Replacement

      Hi Guys,
      While replacing my inner and outer Tie rod ends, I noticed a lot of grease on my right tire and wheel well. I think I may have nicked the CV Boot during my replaced of the control arm a few weeks ago.


      From what I've read online, it really is not worth it to replace the CV boot, the general consensus has been, since you are already down there it is best to replace the entire shaft.


      What are your thoughts? Should I replace both sides or just the side that is leaking?
      I could not find that anyone has published a how-to.
      Has anyone done this before who is willing to share tips, techniques, replacement part numbers, etcetera.
      I have a 2006 with automatic transmission and 128,000 miles.

      That many miles, the fact you already broke one boot. Just replace them both.

      As a service manager, I am always conscious of costs on customer's vehicles. If you are doing the job yourself, I would just replace the torn boot as long as the CV joint is still good; I would only replace the shaft if the joint was pooched. I would not incur the added expense of the second shaft if the boots on it passed inspection. Boots are generally only torn or not. They are not really a preventative maintenance item and rarely a wear item. Save your money - $15 boot kit vs $125 shaft.

      Thanks for the reply guys, I think I’mgoing to go with replacing the half axels, I know it will cost a bit moremoney, but with the funds I’m saving doing it myself I feel I can afford to splurgea bit.

      I’ve never been too mechanicallyinclined but thanks to countless contributing members on this forum, I havebeen able to take on and successfully complete many jobs I once though beyondmy abilities.
      (Timing belt, pulleys and water pump;Brakes front and back; shocks and struts; Control arms; Inner and outer Tierods are some of the more notable jobs.)

      But like I stated on my originalpost, I’ve never done this kind of Job before and would appreciate anyhelp/tips from members who have done this job. (Part number for trusted brandand time saving techniques.)
