      Question Oil pressure sensor?

Hello once again, was driving my 2004 aveo down the road today and my oil light came on so i pulled over at the local mini mart and bought a 6 dollar quart of valvoline conventional (i use that, quaker state or pennzoil) and a roll of paper towels. Checking the dipstick yielded i was dead on max fill ( how it should be). After restarting the car the light went out but immediatly as i got back on the road the light flickered for a bit and then came on solid, I checked again at the grocery store and again the dipstick said max fill. So now im out 6 bucks (ripoff) and i have a gauge cluster light on. Is it possibly the pressure sensor? car ran fine for my 15 mile round trip.

      A couple things....

First, your oil pressure light going off is an indicator of low oil pressure, not just a low amount of actual oil.

Second, is your light flickering when at low RPMS's (below idle/800rpm)? If so, that should be expected as the oil pump is connected to the crankshaft. If your light is flickering at anything higher, you either have low oil pressure, which can be caused by a number of things, or just a faulty oil pressure sensor.

If you need to swap out the sensor, here is a write up.

I noticed no issue with drivability and the engine made its usual noise. Last time the light was going off was when i got the car and it was a quart low on oil due to a blown valve cover gasket pourin oil onto the manifold. I just went up the road a short bit and it was an off beat flicker. Ill try replacing the sensor at school and see if it still flashes on the 30 mile ride home from tech school.

Well you can do "you should not have done that check"
Take the oil fill cap off and start the engine. If oil splatters out, then the oil pump is working. Just have LOTS of paper towels ready.

I did a more controlled version of that by putting a shop rag over the hole and starting the engine, the rag was coated and I noticed the light was not on anymore. I'm 99 percent sure it's the sensor, Ill get a sensor next time I'm out and swap it at school on the lift.

Quick update, I'm now certain it's the sensor cause I drove the car for about 6 miles and the light came on when I got to my friends house and went out when I started the car later and then flickered as soon as i pulled out onto the road then stopped again about a mile down and stayed out

I am glad you did fall to my subtle trolling and suggestion and did the right thing. At least we were both on the right diagnostic test.
