      No Spark

      Greetings.

My son was driving his car a couple of days ago. WHile driving the car just stalled. No power, no engine, nothing

I got it towed to the house.. thought it might be the fuel pump. HOwever, there is fuel pressure to the fuel rail. What I am finding is no spark

I metered out the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor and both match a new sensor.

Replaced the ignition coil pack with no change in behavior, still no spark.

      Thoughts?

      Engine coolant sensor?

      Thanks

I like the idea. For $9 it was worth a shot.

      No love.

Just changed the camshaft angle sensor since the old one was reading odd on the multimeter. That did not change anything.

So, I tried an ignition coil pack, fuel pump, camshaft sensor, verified there was a signal from the crankshaft sensor, oil pressure switch and new plug wires (since I broke two of them trying to test for spark)

No stored codes on the ODBC reader

      any other thoughts?

Did you check to see if everything is ok with the timing belt loop?

How did you come to the conclusion that there is no spark? Did you use a spark tester?

I had a similar problems a few months ago. I swapped a bunch of sensors, ordered a new PCM etc.....turns out my plugs were fouled out with oil. Changed the plugs and I was back up and running.

Well.. since this is an interference engine, if the timing belt hopped a lobe on one of the pulley's, wouldn't I notice noise or other issues?

Also, my son noted that this has happened before... he backed out of his drive and the car just died.. he could get it restarted and go.. just this time it won't restart

I did use both a spark tester and pulled a plug, put the plug back in the wiring boot, grounded the plug and had someone turn the engine over.. no spark. I guess I can try new plugs

Actually, there have been many reports of timing belt loop issues, including bent valves, with no abnormal noise coming from the engine. Keep in mind that the contact takes place inside of the cylinders, and is not necessarily going to be externalized. OTOH, a one tooth jump is very likely to result in a least some combustion - not great, but at least something.

I suggested checking this because it's a very easy thing to do - just remove the top half of the timing cover, watch as it cranks, and also inspect the belt. But if the belt loop is ok (and hopefully that's the case), then how old are the plugs and how do they look? Trying new plugs is cheap and easy, and a reasonable thing to try. But beyond that, I'd recommend trying to diagnose instead of just hanging on more parts.

Do you have an immobilizer light on the dash or anything during cranking? does the car have immobilizer?

      Have you checked the relays?

So... how does having the top timing belt cover off help? I can see if the two top pulleys are in time. How does that help me with the lower crankshaft timing validation?

      I'll try plugs tomorrow.
