It is gm t-iv fluid, specifically. but many aftermarket (maybe better) fluids meet the specs needed.

      i'm only 99% though, i hate automatics.

Go to a Chev dealer and ask for Trade Pricing on their new Dex6. It's fully synthetic and completely backwards compatible.

I know dex 3 and type iv are not interchangeable/mixable. but that max life is probably a newer hybrid (like the type 6 maybe?)

make sure you don't just add fluid and mix varieties. Of if you do, make sure they are the same type or interchangeable.

Its compatible with all sorts of fluids including the type IV, I am going to drain the fluid using the plug in the pan, add 2.3 qts, drive it for a mile or 2 and do it again 2-3 more times.

It IS Dexron III, which is relatively cheap and easy to find. I buy it by the gallon in Wal-mart, as all my cars use Dex III. You'll never go wrong by keeping your A/T fluid clean.

Dark brown fluid is not a good sign.

i hate to say this, but do not use dexron III in the aveo. It specifically calls for T-IV (or the newer backwards compatible fluids).

The newer fluids can be interchanged with both T-iv or dex 3, but dex 3 and T-iv should not be interchanged.
