      Will not start

I have a 2006 Aveo. I loaned it to a friend, a water line broke and the car overheated. My friend claims he pulled over immediately and the car died as he pulled onto the hiway shoulder. He swears he did not put any water in the engine. I went to pick up the car the next morning and it would not start. I replaced the valve cover gasket ( it leaked oil into the spark plug rails). I checked the timing (all gears and belt lined up correctly). I installed new plugs and wires. The fuel pressure at the rail is 50psi. The injector voltage is the same as the battery. The injector resistance is good. I can't even get it to try to crank with starting fluid. Fire, fuel, and timing... I am stumped! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Unless you have actually watched the plugs spark (grounded to the block) while cranking, there's no proof you have fire. My guess would be that you don't have it. Coolant spraying around the engine bay might have shorted something - did you check fuses and relays? Once you get it going, might be a good idea to do a leak down test, just to make sure the HG didn't go South as a result of the overheat.

if it were me, I would do a compression test first to make sure the overheating didn't do the HG in; to the OP, does the cranking sound normal?
