      Why Is This Happening?

I purchased the 2010 Aveo5 with an automatic transmission brand new and for the first 20,000 miles the car achieved an average of 24mpg. However, at about 21,000 miles the fuel economy got better reaching 33mpg. Now today the car has about 50,000 miles and the fuel economy is back down to 26mpg. This issue is very frustrating because if I have to drive such a small car I expect to get good fuel economy. I took it to two dealers and they both said that if the "check engine" light or some other dash board warning is not activated they are not going to be able to diagnose any issue. My question is what systems can be checked to determine why this is happening. FYI my driving habits have not changed it's the same as when I got 33mpg, I use top tier fuel from Shell, and I follow my owner's manual for all of my vehicle's maintenance needs.
